Claire is happily married in the 1940s, until she stumbles through a stone circle into another time, a darker and more dangerous time, and right into the arms of Jamie Fraser, a red headed, stubborn, Scot from two hundred years ago. I had heard so much about Outlander when I started reading – heard a lot about the show, plus my mum told me for the past 10 years that she had devoured those books within days, so I thought I’d give it a try and oh my god, I did not regret it. Diana Gabaldon’s storytelling is some of the best I’ve ever read. There wasn’t a single boring chapter, page or scene, I drank up every last word. Even the calmer scenes with day-to-day life from 1740 Scotland were amazing. Every single character is interesting, some are infuriating, some are breath-taking. I loved the chemistry between Claire and Jamie, and even more than that I loved Claire’s independence, her modern mindset, that she wasn’t just a damsel in distress. *Trigger warning, therefore mild SPOILER* Some scenes where very hard to read though, there should definitely be a trigger warning about rape, attempted rape, and the typical violence one could expect in the Highlands of 1740.
