Today is the release day for “A Deal with the Elf King” so first of all: Happy Book-Birthday to elise.kova !!! I had quite a tough and very emotional day today, but I decided to still write that review I have been procrastinating for the past 1.5 weeks or so. Because I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this wonderful book and I heard reviews on pub day are very good for an author. And the truth is? Elise Kova wrote a masterpiece with ADwtEK and everyone needs to read it! ADwtEK is a standalone fantasy romance novel and that in itself is no easy task. I think standalone fantasy novels are the most difficult, because you not only have to build a fantastical world within a few hundred pages, but you also have to write characters that have depth and are likeable. Elise manages to do this all. I had absolutely no difficulties getting into this book. I started reading and I immediately felt like I arrived and that this world welcomes me. Luella was a very likeable and sympathetic character with strong personality traits. You immediately knew that this girl would do everything to help others without asking for anything in return and this trait not only showed throughout the entire book, it also played a very important part of the story as a whole. And then there was Eldas. Eldas the great and terrible Elf King. A persona that is cold and inapproachable. And oh did I fall for him. Right away. I love me some cold and bad-boy-ish magical king. Lol Of course I was intrigued by him!!! The story progressed quick and was fast paced, but it still gave us a slow-burn romance which I absolutely adored. We slowly get to know more about both characters and see them unravel more and more with every page read. While the romance did play a very important part in the story there was still room for an actual plot, however! We did get to see more than two characters falling for each other. We did see a “big problem” (read the book if you want to know what I’m talking about) and experienced a race against time that was well done and made you want to turn page after page. And what I mean by that is; frankly I couldn’t put the book down anymore. The side characters in the story were lovely as well (this is also another book with an adorable animal companion by the way…) and while I wish we could have seen a little more of a few of these characters, I also understand that there just weren’t enough words/ time (because standalone). However, there will be more books playing in this world that will belong to the “Married to Magic” series. And who knows? Maybe Elise will give us a treat and some characters will reappear? I would like that very much, but reappearing characters or no, I am SO LOOKING FORWARD to the next book!!! 4.5/5 stars!
