After first falling in love with dystopian books years ago, I have had many hit or miss reads and eventually I pretty much gave up on the genre. So I was hesitant to pick up Scythe and I was ready to be disappointed. Luckily, I was not! Scythe takes place in a seemingly perfect words, there is no more poverty, war, disease, unemployment, and no more death. However, to prevent overpopulation Scythes were installed to randomly "glean" people, meaning to kill them. They follow specific rules to remain just. The books follows two Scythe apprentices, so we learn about their world through their eyes. I was captivated by the book immediately. The whole concept was very interesting to me and while reading one can't help oneself but begin to question morality and the philosophical meaning of life and death, technology and nature etc. Meanwhile, the book is easy to read and well-written. The characters are likable and interesting. The book is told through an omnipresent voice that changes perspectives between main characters and occasionally also side character. Because of that I felt like I didn't form as strong of an emotional connection to the characters as I do in stories told in first person. Still, it worked really well for the story and I became highly invested anyways. Pacing, plot and the writing style are impeccable. I highly recommend Scythe!
