I totally forgot that this book was still waiting for a review... The Betrothed was... okay. It had some nice aspects and it had potential, but there were also quite a few things that annoyed me or that I just didn't understand. I liked it and I didn't sort of. This was definitely not Kiera's best book and if I didn't know that she had written the AMAZING Selection series, I would have thought that this was her debut novel. It felt incomplete in many ways and aspects. It felt hurried. I think it things would have taken more time to develop it would have been better. I liked Hollis as a character. She isn't the brightest candle on the cake, but she knows this and when dressing up and looking nice is what she can do to lift the mood then that's what she'll do. And I liked that simplicity. But there's also charater development. She discovers that there could be more for her, that SHE could be more and that there could be something more real. And even though she knows she would be best off staying where she is, she doesn't. She takes the risks and pursues the real thing and this was what I really liked about Hollis and the book in general. Then, however, there were flat and superficial side characters, someone that turned out as a b**ch and insta love... oh well... that insta love. It was cute in the beginning, then everything felt rushed and I disliked that, however, what I didn't know back then was that Kiera Cass had a plan. And when everything blew up in our faces, I understood that plan and honestly? A few things made more sense after that... and... here's me, hoping that book 2 will be better, because I AM curious...
