4.5* I didn’t expect to love this as much as I did!! I heard quite a few negative reviews about this book before and while I really wanted to read and enjoy this book (because I love both the Disney version of the little mermaid and the original tale) I was hesitant. Now, I decided to finally give it a go and I listened to it on audio and boy, I wasn’t disappointed at all! I loved that the story was very close to the original tale by Hans Christian Andersen, with the sea foam and having to kill the prince and all. I loved the very dark take on it and I did like that the Sea Queen and Lira’s mother was basically Ursula from the Disney version. I liked the pirate aspect as well. And the adventure that quickly turned into something else. And though this is a standalone novel I found the pacing to be perfect. Nothing felt too rushed, not even the romance. The pacing of the romance was perfect as well. No insta-love, but rather a slow enemies-to-lovers trope. (view spoiler) The adventure aspect was well thought through and the ending left me a bit surprised, but it still felt right to end it this way! All in all, I loved this book!
