4.5* The Night Circus was a great book, but also so confusing! If it weren’t for the Winter Wars, a Goodreads group challenge, I probably wouldn’t have read this book. And well, also sort of for the very beautiful Waterstones Exclusive Edition for the Night Circus that I ordered after seeing the beautiful cover and sprayed blue edges (and the Exclusive edition for The Starless Sea which also jumped into my basket), but I’m besides the point here. Goodreads made me read it, so thank you lovely people of the Procrastinators Book Club! ❤️ Okay, so, that’s why I even picked it up in the first place. And I am so so glad I did! Yes, the story was confusing. Especially in the beginning. But then again that’s probably how the protagonists felt as well. And the circus patrons. And the spectators. Everyone had to grow accustomed to the circus at first. And while it was confusing with the jumping in time and the many different perspectives, it was also beautifully written. The writing style is whimsical and intricate and it creates an atmosphere filled with magic, wonder and allure. The historical aspect with the description of gowns and suits only added to this wondrous feeling. While reading this book I constantly had the setting of a grey and mist covered London in mind, even though not every chapter played in London. But this picture in my mind was the perfect addition to the magic used in this story. I believe that this is what makes a book atmospheric! There were also many characters. I didn’t understand the importance of most of them in the beginning, but this book is like a giant puzzle with different pieces scattered everywhere. You will pick up a piece and don’t know whether it even belongs to the puzzle you’re working at in the beginning. But then more and more pieces click into place and in the end you have a perfect puzzle where everything makes sense. I think this boo is one that will be even better reading the second time, because then you’ll be able to truly grasp the scope of the story and you will notice all the little pieces and hints that you missed the first time around. And I also loved the romance in the book. Somehow it is the focus of the story, but then again it’s not. Not really. The main part is the circus after all, but the love story is tied to the circus and in a way the circus is one giant love letter passing back and forth. Everything in the circus is a declaration of love for everyone to see. Whether you understand this or not is a different thing. But once you do… ❤️❤️❤️ (needless to say; I am a huge romantic when it comes to things like this :D) I am beyond excited to read the Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern now and I hope it’ll be just as good as this wonderful story!
