Where The Crawdads Sing is filled with the detailed description of the marsh and its wildlife – a place that Kya calls her home. Abandoned by her mother and siblings, she grows up with her abusive father who also leaves her eventually. The fear and pain of being left by everyone she loves sticks with her. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Nevertheless, there are indeed happy moments, especially when Tate – a boy also living in the marsh – is around. He teaches her how to read and write, something she never learned because she only went to school for one day of her life. Just when everything seems perfect, Delia Owens takes a 180° turn with Kya’s life and leads her to the point where she’s accused of murder. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝙸 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚍 𝚊𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚋𝚘𝚘𝚔: the description of nature, the plot at the end (though it’s a bit forced), Tate and Kya’s relationship, Kyas bravery, the poems ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝙸 𝚍𝚒𝚍𝚗‘𝚝 𝚎𝚗𝚓𝚘𝚢 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚖𝚞𝚌𝚑: I could’ve used a bit more suspense and action, the relationship with Chase seemed a bit rushed ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The story is a slow one and is surely taking its time. However, I think that’s fine and fitting. Without spoiling too much, I can tell you that the book makes your heart ache for Kya. Where The Crawdads Sing ist a thoroughly touching book that embraces the raw forces of nature.
