Had high hopes for City of Girls. Set in New York City in the 40s and in a small theatre – I technically couldn‘t wish for more. Sadly, Elizabeth Gilbert‘s book was quite a disappointment for me. The main character – Vivian Morris – writes to Angela – the daughter of a man she once knew – who asked how she met her father. This simple question leads to Vivian basically bragging about her sex life and wild and free spirit. Although you might think life could not possibly be boring in NYC, nothing ever really happens in the story. When Vivian finally gets to the part where she speaks about Angela‘s father, we‘ve got three more chapters left. After quickly introducing the man that – allegedly – has still such a bit impact on Vivian, all seems rushed and over to soon, leaving you wondering what the part about Vivian‘s former life had to do with all of this. Unfortunately, I could not get anything out of Elizabeth Gilbert‘s book other than some nice quotes and a very spot on description of the theatre life back then. It took me over two weeks to get through it and put me in a bit of a reading slump.
