I listened to this on audio. Now, I’m usually not one for audio books and in all my life (before Scythe that is) I listened to only one audio book. However, we had an 8 hour drive when going into holiday this month and I am unable to read in the car. I immediately get sick. So I figured, why not try out another audio book? And let me tell you, I enjoyed it SO much. Especially the voice of the German narrator was perfect - dark and soothing and I could listen to him for hours on end (which I did XD). Anyhow, I wanted to write a review for Scythe and not the sexy voice of the narrator. Haha Scythe is an amazing book. The world Neal Shusterman created is dark and very realistic. It’s set in our modern world’s future, which is basically managed by an artificial intelligence. And I say managed, because that is exactly how it is. It is not some dystopian ruler, the „Thunderhead“ is good and only wants the best for every human being on earth. He manages jobs, infrastructure etc and even is a father figure for some. Humankind in this world has become immortal. There are no more diseases, no more brutality and death, no more accidents. Humans cannot die a natural way anymore. There is almost no way for humans to really be gone. It they get hit by a car? Revival? If they get stabbed? Revival. Jumping from top of a house? Revival. The only way for people to really die without any possibility of coming back is being selected and gleaned by a Scythe. A Scythe is basically someone whose job it is to kill people… right. And… doesn’t that sound both terrifying and absolutely amazing at the same time? I think it does. At first I was kind of skeptical of this world and how it works, but then I got to know Citra, Rowan and Scythe Faraday and I liked it. And it was addictive. Citra is a very bold character. She is charismatic, competitive and very ambitious. She doesn’t want to be a Scythe; she is too empathetic for this kind of job, but what she starts she will complete and I came to admire her for these traits. Rowan is a little bit of the broody kind. He is smart, funny, nice, but also has a kind of darkness at his core. Seeing him develop and get to know himself better, find out out who he really is at his core was super interesting to witness! Scythe was a great ride and helped me overcome what would else be in total 16 very long and very boring hours of driving in the backseat. Great book!
