I loved the Selection series, and even Siren was a book I liked. Kiera Cass is one of my favorite authors, and having to rate this book with 3 stars breaks my heart. I really, really wanted to love this. Here's why I didn't: While none of the characters were annoying, they were simply flat. I longed for more descriptions, more depth, more character traits (Jameson, for example, was just "nice"). And for me, the love triangle was a bit rushed. The other guy that Hollis meets, is only fairly introduced and they speak maybe two sentences with each other, before she notices her feelings? Kiera Cass is the queen of love and doubt, as the Selection series shows. Why was this so hard here?? The style definitely saved the book for me. I loved the Renaissance and Royal Court vibes. And the ending is a memorable one; and the only reason I want to read book 2. There is finally action and suspense. Honestly, I think that one big book with more pages would have been better. This felt just like the boring and 100-pages-too-long instruction for a solid story. So fingers crossed that book 2 will live up to my expectations again!
