The title drew me to this book when I first saw it in a shop around 2017. As I have a great interest in stories from WWII, I had to get it. Anthony Doerr has a way of telling things so beautifully with the simplest of words. All The Light We Cannot See embraces humanity in the darkest of times and leaves its reader with an idea of all the different lives that were affected by WWII. With witnesses slowly dying, it‘s important not to let these stories become untold and forgotten. Although this book is fictional, I’m convinced it could easily be based on a true story. It‘s just very real and touching. When I look at this on my shelf, I feel a strange kind of melancholy. Marie-Laure is such a strong character - in fact all of the characters in this book are brilliant. To "see" WWII through her perspective feels just really intruding. ⠀ Have some of my favourite quotes to get an idea of the masterpiece this book is: “All your life you wait, and then it finally comes, and are you ready?” “When I lost my sight, Werner, people said I was brave. When my father left, people said I was brave. But it is not bravery; I have no choice. I wake up and live my life. Don't you do the same?” “What do we call visible light? We call it color. But the electromagnetic spectrum runs to zero in one direction and infinity in the other, so really, children, mathematically, all of light is invisible.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
