"The Shadows between Us" is a wonderful standalone by Tricia Levenseller! I really loved her debut novel "Daughter of the Pirate King " and her new protagonist Alessandra is just as fierce as Captain Alosa. Alessandra was deeply hurt by her first lover and has sworn to never ever love someone again. Her only aim is to get power and appreciation. She wants to swoon king Kallias, marry him and kill him to take the kingdom for herself. Sounds good? It is incredible! Tricia's writing style is very unique. She describes scenes like no one else and found the perfect balance between light and fluffy YA and exciting fantasy. Kallias' powers consist of Shadows surrounding him. The romance in this book is a steamy slow-burn one. You just want them to lower their shields! The plot is exciting. The opening scene already captured me and I barely could stop reading. The setting reminded me of "The Selection " and Alessandra is a lot like Kestrel from "Winner's Curse ". The story is a bit slow paced but a lot happens in the 3rd part of the book. Unfortunately some things got a lot of attention throughout the story and didn't play a big role in the end. Nevertheless, this book is really epic and leaves you with quite the book hangover.
